Congress Considers Healthcare Worker Protections.

How the SAVE Act Aims to Safeguard Healthcare Workers from Violence

Paul Dusenbery, Curriculum Director, DART 8/23/2024

In a promising move for healthcare professionals across the country, Congress is currently deliberating a bill called the SAVE Act (“Safety From Violence for Healthcare Employees Act”). It would redefine the legal landscape for assaults against those in the medical field, offering the protections that workers in aircraft industries and at airports have. This proposed legislation seeks to classify assaults on healthcare workers as federal crimes, marking a potential shift towards enhanced protection for these essential frontline workers.

Why This Legislation Matters

Healthcare workers—comprising doctors, nurses, paramedics, and other vital staff—serve on the frontlines of public health, often working in high-stress environments where their safety can be at risk. Recently, there has been a disturbing rise in incidents of violence against these professionals. Healthcare workers are five times as likely to experience workplace violence as other workers, according to government data. In a National Nurses United survey in 2022, 40 percent of hospital nurses said they'd seen an increase in violent incidents.

Workplace violence has severe consequences for the entire health care system. Not only does violence cause physical and psychological injury to health care workers, workplace violence and intimidation make it more difficult for nurses, doctors, and other clinical staff to provide quality patient care. Check out this PBS News Weekend report, What’s behind an alarming rise in violent incidents in health care facilities, for more information. Recognizing the need for stronger protections, Congress is considering a bill that would address this issue with greater severity.

The proposed legislation would elevate the status of assaults on healthcare workers to federal crimes. This move aims to:

  1. Enhance Protections: By making such assaults federal offenses, the legislation seeks to impose stricter legal consequences for those who engage in violence against healthcare professionals. This added layer of protection is essential to protecting those who dedicate their lives to caring for others.
  2. Raise Awareness: This bill would also serve as a powerful statement about the value we place on our healthcare workforce. By highlighting the issue of violence against these workers, the legislation brings much-needed attention to the challenges they face and the importance of their safety.
  3. Support Healthcare Professionals: Implementing this bill would signal a significant shift in how we address violence against healthcare workers. It acknowledges their crucial role in our society and the need to provide a safer environment for them to perform their duties.

What This Means for the Future

While the bill is still under consideration, its potential impact is substantial. If passed, it could lead to:

Conclusion

As Congress considers this pivotal bill, it's important for communities and individuals to recognize the significance of protecting healthcare workers. These professionals are vital to our well-being and deserve to work in environments free from the threat of violence. Supporting this legislation is a step toward ensuring that our healthcare heroes can continue to provide the care we need in a safe and secure manner.

Stay informed about this legislative development and consider advocating for measures that support the safety and respect of our healthcare professionals. Their well-being is crucial to the health of our entire society.
